What’s your Bounce Hit?

Half a century ago, Timothy Gallwey impressed the world with his theory in The Inner Game of Tennis, stating that he could teach anyone how to play tennis within two hours—just by concentrating on and repeating the words: bounce – hit, bounce – hit, bounce – hit.

From that moment on, the inner game became a huge part of any professional game or sport. Brilliant! Two simple words: bounce – hit. While repeating them in my head right now, I automatically visualize myself in the middle of a tennis match—and I’m not even a tennis player.

As an executive mind manager, however, it fuels my creativity.
It got me thinking: what is my bounce hit?
And what could be the bounce hit of any of my coachees?

A decade later, in The Inner Game of Golf, Gallwey addresses the fact that when the game becomes more complex, you might need more than two words. In our own game called life, we definitely face complexity—yet there are still plenty of bounce hits to be found.

Interestingly enough, while mental preparation has become a huge part of professional sport, in our professional lives it still isn’t seen with the same relevance.
